A Whole New World

I've never been one to write my thoughts down or even find my life's events worthy of entertaining others, but what the heck - I guess I'm just that bored that I've decided to start a family blog. Seeing how my old school scrapbooking days have long been pushed under the bed, I might as well attempt what seems to be an electronic version of a scrapbook.

I told David he should be the one to blog...and I'll be the one to make sure we take pictures if we ever do something interesting. We'll see how that goes. We might end up with a family blog about fantasy leagues.

For now, I should probably do some catch-up for anyone we've lost touch with who's reading this. So here we are. Living life as a young married couple. Somehow our 2 year journey has contained 3 apartment moves in 2 states, 2 graduations, 2 job changes, over 10 months of living on separate coasts, and now we find ourselves reunited and braving the Big Apple. As we like to say..."Uff da!" It's been a crazy start to married life.

This summer, I completed an internship in Portland, Oregon that finally allows me to start my career as a registered dietitian. I spent most of July and August studying for my RD exam and searching/applying/interviewing for jobs. It was exhausting and extremely boring, but I got it done. I'm now officially Kelly Skretta, RD, CDN...and I'm awaiting my start date as a clinical dietitian at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. My experience with Bellevue so far deserves a blog of its own...so I'll spare you this time. As for David, he continues to be a stellar AP sports writer...got to cover so many Yankees and Mets games this summer that I lost track. I'm only slightly jealous. All the perks of his job have a shadow cast over them, however. The hours are beyond inconveniencing. The corporate culture of the AP isn't great. Frankly, it's exhausting and it's turning my husband into a zombie. It's a rare treat to hear him laugh. So as I get set to start my career, David is starting to explore how best to continue his...more on this later. Now an ode to our neighorhood. I say we live in NYC and people think "Sex and the City." Think again. David and I live deep in the heart of immigrant Brooklyn. We're minorities in so many respects. We were born in America...and so were our grandparents. We are young. We are married. We love college football. We're not that excited by alcohol. And the list goes on. Our neighborhood never ceases to fascinate me though. Within 3 blocks we have Russian, Chinese, and Orthodox Jewish enclaves. I hear so many languages, I'm actually surprised when someone walks by speaking English. We were quick to purchase a street cart for all our errands as we didn't have a car the first year of living here....fortunately there are countless laundromats, bodegas, banks, and the post office within a half a mile. I can't leave out the pizzarias though...I've quickly grown to love Brooklyn-style pizza. And the Italian Brooklynites who own these places are priceless...they inspire my Brooklyn accent attempts. Despite its charms, our Brooklyn lifestyle is starting to get really old. David's subway commute is an hour each way, assuming the trains are behaving. My commute will be even longer... So we've decided to sacrifice our "cheap" two-bedroom monster of an apartment (750 sq ft is enormous here) and move into Manhattan next June when our lease is up. We're gonna search high and low for a decent 1-bdrm for $2400. Good luck us.
So consider our family blog officially rollin'. Hopefully we'll amuse you at some point by how ridiculously boring our daily life is... Feel free to comment!
